Born in Sheffield in about 1820, Alfred Green lived and worked in King Street, Portmahon – a thoroughfare in Netherthorpe that had disappeared by 1900. Green was enumerated in the Census in 1841 as a ‘blade grinder’ and then in 1851 as a ‘table blade grinder and beerhouse keeper’. In 1868, he advertised in a Sheffield directory as a table knife manufacturer in King Street, but also had a grocery shop. He was last listed in a directory in 1871.
