William Marshall Barnes was baptised on 22 February 1801, the son of Thomas (a silver plater) and his wife, Martha. In 1825, he married Louisa née Fox in Rotherham. William was a pen knife cutler, who by 1836 was renting a plot of land for building development in Trafalgar Street. In 1839, he was listed as a pen knife manufacturer at 92 Trafalgar Street.
