George Heathcote was probably born on 21 March 1802, the son of John (a cutler) and Betty. He was listed as a pen knife manufacturer in Siddall Street in 1837. In the Census (1841), he was a publican in Broad Lane End, living with his wife, Mary, and their two sons and daughter. He was insolvent in 1843, but by the end of that decade was listed again as a spring knife manufacturer in Jericho Street and publican at the Manor Castle, Edward Street.
