George Davenport was born in Sheffield in 1840, the son of Joseph Davenport (an edge tool forger in Sylvester Street) and his wife, Eliza. By 1861, George was a white metal smith, living in Lower Heeley. By the late 1860s, Davenport had partnered in Eyre Street another white metal smith William Henry Bray (1832-1899?).
