Albert Sinclair Fairest (1884-1972) was born in Sheffield. He was the son of Henry Fairest – variously described in the Census as a ‘gilder of razor scales’ and a ‘gold blocker’ – and his wife, Hannah. By 1919, Henry was listed as a gilder in Fitzwilliam Street. Albert became a pearl fluter. When he set up his own business is unknown, but in 1939 he described himself as a cutler.
