Thomas Padley was born on 18 July 1815, the son of Adam Padley, a ‘bookkeeper’, and his wife, Sarah. In the Census (1841), Thomas was a ‘cutlery manufacturer’, living in South Street with his father. A decade later, he was enumerated as a manager in the razor trade, living in Devonshire Street.
