John Swift appeared in the first Sheffield directory in 1774, as a scissors maker at York Street. His trade mark was ‘E6’. In 1781, John Swift was listed as a cutler and scissors maker at China [Cheney] Square. His name disappeared from subsequent Sheffield directories and presumably he had died. In the directories of 1787 and 1797, Thomas Swift was listed as a scissors maker at Smithfield. He was apparently John’s son (bapt. 27 March 1765) and had become a Freeman in 178....
