Charles Anthony Argyle (1859-1938) was born in Sheffield, the son of Joseph (a carter and later horse keeper at a brewery) and his wife Maria. He worked as a railway clerk and then commercial clerk. In 1883, at Queen Street Chapel he married Clara Emily, the eldest daughter of Fanshaw Dixon. Charles A. Argyle later began business as a farriers’, plumbers’, and putty knife manufacturer.
