This was one of the biggest cutlery firms in Sheffield by 1900. It can be traced to George Howson (c.1788-1847), whose background is obscure. Cutlers named Howson are listed in the records of the Company of Cutlers and one was apprenticed as a cutler in 1803 (but the identification is uncertain).
