William Joseph Ward (1843-1923) was born in Sheffield, the son of William (a grinder) and Jane Ward. In 1861, his father was a grocer in Hillfoot (and also a table knife grinder); his son was a merchant’s apprentice. He became a table knife manager and later (probably in 1876) the ‘successor’ of W.
