George Watson was born in Sheffield in about 1830, the son of James Watson (a table knife cutler) and his wife, Elizabeth. In 1841, the family lived in Dun Fields. In the Census (1851), George was a table knife cutler, living in Scotland Street at the home of Eliza Swindon. In the same dwelling was Eliza’s daughter, Caroline (born in France, but a British subject). Caroline was a seamstress and later became George’s wife.
