This firm had a most complex genealogy. For a start, three generations of the Rowbotham family – all named John – were involved. John Rowbotham I (c.1741-1820) was a grocer and chandler in Sims Croft and Tenter Street, who developed an interest in the cutlery trade. He apprenticed his son, John II (1770-1846), to pen-knife cutler Joseph Barraclough, who married into the family. John II was granted his Freedom in 1791.
