James Benn (1817-1886) may have been the son of Marmaduke (a cutler) and his wife, Ellen. James was enumerated in the Census (1841) as a table knife cutler in St Thomas Street, living with his wife Mary. His first directory listing was in 1856 as a table knife manufacturer in Kenyon Works, Edward Street. By 1862, he advertised from an address in Siddall Street.
