George Deakin Sen. (bapt.1773-1850) was born at Attercliffe, the son of William (1740-1815) and Mary née Shepperson (1749-1803). William was known as a butcher, but he was also described as a ‘substantial yeoman, farming a considerable piece of land, his own property, in Attercliffe and Tinsley’ (Reid, 18831).
