In 1895, the Sheffield newspapers reported the death of John Yeomans Cowlishaw. On the morning of 23 Jan-uary 1895, Cowlishaw – depressed since the recent death of his wife, Sarah – had shut himself in the lavatory at his home, Tapton Cliffe, Fulwood Road, and then discharged a double-barrelled shotgun at his head.
