Henry Nicholson (1831-1908) was born in Sheffield, the son of Joseph (a cutler) and his wife, Sarah. Henry married Ann née Nixon in 1849 and two years later was enumerated in the Census as a table knife hafter, living at Burnt Tree Lane. His subsequent address was Stafford Street, where he was a table knife cutler. In 1876, he was listed as a table knife manufacturer at Trafalgar Works, Trafalgar Street. In the Census (1881), he was in Milton Street and employed eight men, two boys, and two females. However, in the following year, Henry and Ann left for America. They settled at Worcester, an industrial city in Massachusetts. In the US Census (1890), Henry’s occupation was stated as tool grinder. Ann died at their home at Chandler Street on 10 June 1906, aged 72. Henry died at Main Street on 14 May 1908, aged 76. ‘Retired razor maker’ was his occupation on his death certificate. Ann was buried at Hope Cemetery in Worcester. Her tombstone is inscribed with Henry’s name and birth year, but he was apparently not buried in the cemetery.
