Brookhill was a rabbit warren of tenement factories and obscure backstreet workshops. This Works was unlikely to have been a grand affair: the name does not apparently appear in Sheffield directories. ‘Brookhill Cutlery Works’ was probably no more than a marketing or factoring operation – perhaps targeted at overseas customers. Table knives and dessert knives marked ‘Firth Stainless’ (with celluloid handles) were advertised in Australia at the start of the 1920s (Brisbane Courier, 9 July 1921).
