The company was formed around 1920 as a partnership between William Fuller Pilch and Alfred Wainwright, located at Radford Street. However, by 28th February 1921 the company had been dissolved by mutual consent and continued under the name of Alfred Wainwright & Son.
William Fuller Pilch was born about 1892 the son of William Frederick Pilch a clothing manufacturer and merchant (William Frederick was the nephew of the famous Fuller Pilch who was reputed to be 'the greatest batsman ever known until the appearance of W. G. Grace', William Frederick also played football for Sheffield Wednesday and was a member of the original committee of Sheffield Wednesday FC). William Fuller initially trained as a draughtsman (1911 Census), later forming Bownoid Manufacturing Co (manufacturing chemist) in partnership with Henry Brown, located at 154 Cemetery Road. This business was dissolved on 3rd December 1917.
By 1939 William Fuller had remarried following the death of his first wife and was living at Sibthorpe Hill near Retford. He is listed in the 1939 Register as a Poultry Farmer along with his wife Florence Grace. William died in hospital on 21st August 1964 leaving £140.
