Charles Hall Frith (1876-1945) was born in Sheffield, the son of Charles Frith (1854-1912) and Mary Jane Hall (1857-1901). Charles Sen. was a file grinder, who was later landlord at the Alma Hotel, Alma Street (now the Fat Cat). Charles Jun. worked as a barman and then succeeded his father as landlord. In 1908, the son was prosecuted for permitting betting on the premises (Sheffield Daily Independent, 7 March 1908). After a fine of £5 (plus costs), Charles Jun. quit the pub. In the following year, his wife Annie née Keen died, aged 32. Charles Sen. died on 27 April 1912 (aged 59) at the Red Lion Hotel, 18 Holly Street. His burial was at City Road Cemetery.
In 1914, Charles Hall Frith married again to Mabel Blanche Morris. In 1916, Charles’s name appeared in a Sheffield directory as a cutlery manufacturer at 10 Holly Street. By 1919, Frith’s address in directories was 43 Club Garden Road – a residential address, which presumably also served as an office. In 1925, Charles Frith & Sons was listed as a cutlery manufacturer at 10 Holly Street. Charles Hall Frith is known to have had at least one son, Charles (1900-1970). In the Census (1939), Charles Hall Frith was a cutlery manufacturer, living at Edgebrook Road. His wife, Mabel, was a cutlery warehousewoman.
Charles Frith & Sons was listed at Holly Street in a Sheffield directory in 1944, but then apparently became defunct. Charles Hall Frith, of Edgebrook Road, died on 11 February 1945 (aged 69) at Nether Edge Hospital. The funeral was at City Road Crematorium. He left £1,322.
