William Roland Storr in his workshop
This was probably a partnership between George Parsisson (1895-1964) and William Rowland Storr (1896-1975), both born in Sheffield. The business first appeared in Kemp's 1929 Sheffield directory, the entry simply being 'Parsisson & Storr, cutlers, 7a, Eyre Lane'. Later, the addresses of the two partners were included, i.e. George Parsisson, 75 Linaker Road, Sheffield 6 and William Roland Storr, 23 Beehive Road. Kelly's 1934 Engineering Hardware & Metal Trades (Cutlery) directory was a little more specific listing the business as 'manufacturing table knives'.
George Parsisson was baptised on 17th July 1895, the son of Fred Parsisson, a file forger and Annie Roebuck. Six years later (1901) the family were housed at 41 Sydney Street, two of George's older siblings, aged 17 (Alice) and 18 (John) were already working in the cutlery industry. By 1911 George, now aged 15 was employed as a table knife cutler and living at 34 Sydney Street. During 1926 George married Florence Augusta Taylor, a drapers assistant, at Broomhall Chapel. The 1939 General Register (compiled before the onset of WWII) recorded George and Florence at 75 Linaker Road, his occupation a 'table knife cutler, hafter, (Master)', (There is no evidence of him being a Master Cutler within the terms of the Sheffield Company of Cutlers).
George died 28th December 1964, aged 69 whilst living at 2 Mather Walk, leaving £336 and a widow, Florence Augusta Parsisson.
The second partner was William Roland Storr, the son of Joseph Storr, a cordwainer (a maker of new shoes from new leather) and Ann Parkinson. William was born whilst living in Grammar Street, Walkley and baptised on 13th May 1896 at St. Bartholomew, Langsett Road. Following the death of William's father, the family appear to have moved to 61 Normandale Road, where the 1901 census enumerates them as 'boarders'. Ten years later (1911 census) William, now 15 years of age, was working as a spring knife cutler, four of his siblings, aged from 13 to 22 were employed in the file or cutlery industries; the family home now at Court 7, House no 1, Channing Street, Walkley. During 1923, whilst living in Palm Street, William married Mabel Hazelwood at St Mary's Church, Walkley. The 1939 General Register listed William as a table knife cutler living at 23 Beehive Road with his wife and two children a girl and a boy.
We would like to thank William’s daughter, the girl mentioned above, and his granddaughter for their help in adding information and images to this entry.
We have no example of their knives in our Collection. If you have any further information, please share it with us via enquiries@hawleytoolcollection.com.
