The brothers were William (1880-1933) and Bernard (1899-1980), who formed Edley Bros in the early 1920s. It was listed in 1925 as a manufacturer of knife sharpeners (the firm held the patent for Yureeda knife sharpeners). The address was Court 8, Eyre Street – previously, the address of Edley & Hill, razor manufacturers, which had been operated by their father.
By 1928, Edley Bros’ location was Pretoria Works, Eyre Street, when it was listed as a manufacturer of stainless fruit and vegetable peelers, tin openers, kitchen knives, grape fruit knives, butter curlers, cheese and garnishing knives. After the death of William on 26 April 1933, aged 53, Bernard operated the firm. By the 1930s, it was based in Sidney Street. It continued to specialise in knife sharpeners and stainless cutlery until about 1980. In 1992, Pretoria Works became a nightclub, known as Niche, which closed in 2005.
