This firm was established in about 1852 as a Britannia metal and electro-plate ware manufacturer in Duke Street. The partners were Edwin James Buxton and Samuel Russell. The former (born c.1823) was the son of Jonathan Buxton, an auditor and highway clerk for Ecclesall Bierlow, and his wife, Ann. Buxton & Russell was dissolved in 1860, when the partners began individual businesses. E. J. Buxton & Co was established in about 1861, when it advertised as a Britannia metal and electro-plate ware manufacturer in Duke Place, St Mary’s Road, and Matilda Street (the former address of Buxton & Russell).
E. J. Buxton & Co proved short-lived. Edwin had married Mary Elizabeth (the only daughter of James Moorhouse). After she died on 30 December 1862, Edwin retired due to ill-health and sold his patterns, tools, and dies in Duke Place (Sheffield Independent, 19 December 1863). He moved to London. He died on a visit to Melbourne, Australia, on 4 October 1865. He left £450 (with the Reverend James Moorhouse as one of the executors).
