Stephen Allender (1778?-1844) was a pen and pocket knife cutler, who may have been born at Rotherham. He was active in Pea Croft by 1817. By the early 1820s, he had moved to Spring Street. In 1841, he was living in Spring Street with his wife, Mary, and their three sons – William, Edwin, and Richard – and daughter, Ann. Stephen died on 4 June 1844 at the age of 67 (according to the burial register of St Peter & St Paul).
The sons had followed their father into the trade and launched their own business. In 1851, William, Edwin, Richard, and Ann were living in Spital Hill. According to the Census, the three men were spring knife cutlers, with 44 year-old William recorded as employing fifteen men. The factory address was first Workhouse Lane, then Shiloh Wheel, Spitalfields. By 1861, Edwin and Richard were living in Catherine Street; William had married and resided in Burngreave Road. He now employed eight men and two boys. William died on 23 November 1866, aged 60. Edwin and Richard continued to manufacture cutlery in Brunswick Road. Richard died on 20 January 1880, aged 57. Edwin relocated to Nursery Wheel, Stanley Street, but died on 12 December 1882, aged 64. The brothers were buried in the same grave in the General Cemetery (which also contains the remains of their sister).
