Hiram Cutler, and his w...">
John E. Cutler, who was born in Sheffield on 9 September 1828, was the son of Hiram Cutler, and his wife, Sarah. He apparently did not join the family firm, but began trading alone. In 1856, he was a ‘merchant and manufacturer’, The Laurels, Glossop Road. In the Census (1871), he described himself as an American merchant in cutlery, steel, and tools. In 1852, he had married Rosa Elizabeth (d. 1885), the second daughter of William Butcher. By the 1880s, Cutler had wider interests as Colonel of the Volunteers (Hallamshire Rifles); chairman of various companies (such as Henry Wilkinson & Co, Wm. Jessop & Sons, and Sheffield Savings Bank); and the chair of Jessop Hospital for Women and the Charity School for Poor Girls. He was a JP and Churchman, who worshipped at St Mark’s, Broomfield (Odom, 19261). John E. Cutler, Valetta, Glossop Road, died on 25 April 1910 (aged 81), leaving £77,768. He was buried in Ecclesall churchyard.
