Samuel Garlick, pen and pocket knife manufacturer, Steel Bank, was listed in the directory of 1833. This was likely Samuel Garlick, born in Hathersage in about 1785, who by 1841 had settled in Hammond Street, Netherthorpe. Directories listed him as a pen, pocket, and lock knife manufacturer. In 1851, he was described in the Census as a ‘Master Cutler’, who employed two men and had been joined by Samuel, his son. Samuel Garlick died in 1852, aged 67, and was buried on 22 November in Portobello churchyard. His son continued the enterprise and by 1868 it was listed as Samuel Garlick & Sons, St Philip’s Works, Upper St Philip’s Road. Samuel was unemployed at the time of the 1881 Census. He later lived in Springvale Road and died on 8 April 1890, aged 68, and was buried in the General Cemetery. His wife, Maxwell, lived until 1907, when she was 80.
