In the Census (1841) James Green, aged 35, was a pen knife cutler living in Hanover Street, with his wife Mary Ann and family. He had first traded at Arundel Street as James Green & Co, but in 1839 had moved to more extensive premises ‘up the Gateway, opposite to Pepper Alley, Fargate’, as a pen, pocket, sportsman, and fruit knife manufacturer (Sheffield Independent, 23 March 1839). Mary Green was a victualler in Little Sheffield. James died on 21 September 1849, aged 45, and was buried in St James’s churchyard. In 1850, Mrs James Green & Co moved from Fargate to West Street, with Mary informing the Census takers (1851) that the business employed eleven men. Mary was listed as the owner of the enterprise in the 1850s, while running a beer house in Pond Street. In 1860, the firm’s stock and tools were sold. Mary became a publican at various addresses, including the Old Crown Inn, Little Sheffield. She had retired by 1871 and died at the residence of her grandchildren in Edmund Road on 29 February 1888, aged 83. She was buried in the General Cemetery.
