Matthew Henry Hollely (1819-1868) was the son of Matthew, a saw handle manufacturer, and Hannah. He became a fancy spring-knife scale manufacturer, who was listed in Rockingham Street (1852) and Bailey Street (1856). In the Census (1861), he was enumerated in Sarah Street as a ‘blade and spring manufacturer’, employing a man and three boys. His son George (by his wife Mary) was already following him in the trade. Matthew H. Hollely, Orange Street, died on 14 July 1868, aged 49. George continued to manufacture blades and springs in Trafalgar Lane. In 1871, when he lived in Wellington Street, he employed five men and three boys. He died on 22 November 1877, aged 36. George’s son, Albert, placed a notice in The Sheffield Independent, 15 December 1877, which stated that he would continue the business. The members of the Hollely family occupy an unconsecrated grave in the General Cemetery, including Albert, who died in 1889, aged 32.
