John Howarth (1890-1956) was first listed as a pen and pocket knife maker in Howard Street in 1951. He was the son of John Howarth (a wheelwright) and his wife, Annie. John Jun. became a spring knife cutler, who lived at Ibbotson Road. An advertisement appeared in The Ironmonger’s Diary (1962), which stated that the firm had over fifty years’ practical experience. John Howarth died on 26 November 1956, leaving £2,255. The firm had ceased trading by the early 1970s.
