Mary Milner appeared in directories between 1833 and 1845 as a pen knife manufacturer in Balm Green, off Barker’s Pool. The Census (1841) enumerated her in Balm Green, living with three sons – John (b. 1823), Alfred (b. 1824), and William (b. 1826) – who were cutlers. No profession was listed for Mary. She was apparently the widow of John Milner, pen knife manufacturer, in Balm Green, who was listed in 1825. Presumably, she kept the Milner name alive until her sons came of age. In 1849 and 1852, Edward and John Milner were spring knife cutlers in Pool Square. Tracking these Milners then becomes difficult. In 1853, Edmund Milner and John Milner, cutlery manufacturers in Balm Green, dissolved their partnership. In 1861, John Milner was enumerated in the Census in Balm Green, but was an agent for Burton Beer. His later biography is untraced. Edmund Milner was apparently bankrupt in 1867. Mary Milner died on 29 May 1874, aged 85, and was buried in the General Cemetery.
