This pen and pocket-knife maker had a brief life, which reflected the short career of one of its principals: John North. He died in 1836 at Charles Street and was buried at the parish churchyard. His obituary runs as follows: ‘On Monday, the 18th inst., Mr John North, aged 32, of the firm of North & Green, pen-knife manufacturers, Arundel Street, after a lingering illness, which he bore with much patience and resignation; he was rightly esteemed by all who knew him’ (Sheffield Independent, 23 April 1836). Little is known about North’s early life: he may have been the son of Benjamin (a cutler) and his wife, Elizabeth. If so, he was born on 27 December 1803. But neither his name nor North & Green’s ever appeared in a directory. His partner is also unidentified, though it may have been the founder of James Green & Co, who later traded from Arundel Street.
