Samuel Barlow (c.1767-1838) was a scissors manufacturer, who by 1797 (when he was listed in a Sheffield directory) was based at Arundel Street. His trade mark was ‘G. FLUTE’. He may have been baptised at Attercliffe on 17 December 1767, the son of Thomas (a scissors smith). The apprenticeship records of the Company of Cutlers listed Samuel, the son of Thomas (scissors smith), who was apprenticed to his father in 1781. Apparently, Thomas died in August 1784 (an individual of that name was buried at St Paul’s), so in that year Samuel was apprenticed to another scissors smith, James Barlow. Samuel was granted his Freedom in 1789. He appeared in directories at Arundel Street until 1837, but died in the following year on 5 March, aged 70, ‘deeply regretted by a numerous circle of friends’ (Sheffield Independent, 10 August 1838). His burial was at St Paul’s.
