A fine scissor maker, William Brookfield was likely baptised on 1 October 1736. If so, his father was George Bruckfield (as the name was then spelled). William was apprenticed to scissor smith John Smith and was granted his Freedom in 1762. He was listed in the directory (1774) at 23 Trinity Street, using the trade mark ‘DEY’. Subsequent directories (1787, 1797) listed him at the same address. His son, by his wife Jemima, was Joseph (1771-1801). The latter was apprenticed to his father and became a Freeman in 1792. The registers of St Paul’s recorded the burials of Joseph (5 August 1801), William (7 February 1804), and Jemima (19 November 1804).
