Revel Brown (the name was more usually spelled as Revill) was listed in 1787 as an inkpot maker at the picturesquely named Truelove’s Gutter. By 1797, he was an inkstand maker and dealer in hardware at the same location (now known as Castle Street). Brown was next joined as a factor and manufacturer by John Wright, Samuel Cocker, James Battie, and John Ardron (the latter was presumably the grocer listed in 1787 at Truelove’s Gutter). This arrangement was dissolved in 1806, after which Brown and Ardon continued as partners. They parted in 1810. In the directory in the following year, Brown was a hardwareman at Castle Street. John Ardron & Co was listed as a saw, edge tool, and joiners’ tool manufacturer at South Street. Revill Brown, a hardwareman at Meadow Street, was buried at the parish church on 19 December 1815, aged 63.
