John Arthur Clarke (c.1860-1927) was the son of William Clarke, a scissor smith, and his wife Elizabeth. John followed his father’s trade and by 1893 was a manufacturer of fine scissors and tailors’ shears. In 1895, he advertised in the Foreign Buyers’ Catalogue, as ‘successor’ to G. Newbould & Sons, Weston Works, Edward Street. He remained in business until after the First World War, but retired in the 1920s. He died in Belper Road on 17 September 1927, aged 68, leaving £3,871. His son, John William Ebenezer Clarke, continued as a scissors manufacturer. He was a partner in Clarke & Warburton, which was listed in the 1930s and 1940s in Edward Street and then Solly Street. His partner was A. G. Warburton, Ashdell Road.
