Ernest Henry Danson (1888-1979) was born at Wigan, the son of Thomas and Ellen. Like his father, Ernest worked as a railway spring maker. In the Sheffield directory (1919), though, Ernest’s name was listed as a fried fish dealer at Langsett Road. But in about 1920, he became a scissors maker based in a courtyard in Edward Street. By the late 1930s, Danson’s address was Scotland Street. In 1939, he was living at Dixon Road and working as a master ‘steel scissors manufacturer’. Danson’s became a private limited company in 1945 and after the war operated from 56 Garden Street. The firm wound down and in the 1970s became a merchant and subsidiary of George Butler & Co Ltd. In 1976, when it finally closed, its Garden Street premises were shared with Geo. H. Stansfield, a mark forger. Danson’s business records are held by Sheffield Archives. E. H. Danson, 9 Clifford Drive, Lowestoft, died on 2 February 1979, aged 90. His funeral was at Great Yarmouth Crematorium.
