George Davenport was born in Sheffield in 1840, the son of Joseph Davenport (an edge tool forger in Sylvester Street) and his wife, Eliza. By 1861, George was a white metal smith, living in Lower Heeley. By the late 1860s, Davenport had partnered in Eyre Street another white metal smith William Henry Bray (1832-1899?). In 1870, Davenport & Bray was dissolved. Bray entered Ecclesall Bierlow Union Workhouse, but later became a beer-house keeper. Davenport continued as a Britannia metal and electro-plate manufacturer at 57-58 Eyre Street. In 1871, he employed three men and two boys; in 1881, two men and a woman. By 1891, he was an insurance agent. He died on 20 July 1898, aged 57, and was buried at the General Cemetery. His last job was as a cleaner and dyer and he lived on the Ecclesall Road.
