Ann Garner (born at Hornby, Yorkshire) was enumerated in the Census (1851) as a widow and surgical bandage maker in Norfolk Street. By 1856, she was apparently the wife of William Garner Snowden (born in Newcastle c.1829), who advertised as a surgical instrument maker in Norfolk Street (‘ladies waited upon by Mrs Snowden’). He became bankrupt in 1868, when he had an office in Deansgate, Manchester. William and Ann apparently separated and the former may have remarried in Dublin. Ann continued to trade as ‘late W. G. Snowden’ and advertised in 1871. By 1879, she had sold the business to Leeds-born William Ackroyd Scott (died 13 February 1883, leaving £3,440). Ann’s last address was Norfolk Villa, 12 Chippinghouse Road. She died on 1 December 1886, aged 75, and was buried in an unconsecrated grave in City Road Cemetery, leaving £1,391.
