John Gay was a surgical instrument maker in Leeds (first at Kirkgate, then Briggate) between 1817 and about 1850. In 1849, he was also listed in Norfolk Street, Sheffield, as a manufacturer of surgical instruments, trusses, and artificial limbs. In 1850, the Sheffield business was relinquished and Gay’s partnership with his son was dissolved. John Gay died in Leeds on 15 January 1851, aged 63.
