In the Census (1861), Thomas Hodgkinson (c.1828-1903) was living at Cherry Mount with his wife, Maria, and his father-in-law, Samuel Mettam. The latter was a 72-year-old widowed horn merchant (see Roberts & Mettam); Thomas Hodgkinson was a horn merchant’s clerk (presumably working for Samuel). Thomas had been born at Owlerton. When Samuel died in 1870, Thomas advertised as Mettam’s ‘successor’ as a horn handle manufacturer at Horn Works, Howard Street. In 1876, the address was Burgess Street. By 1879, the enterprise was known as ‘& Son’, with the addition of Thomas Mettam Hodgkinson (c.1857-1926). The firm was based at Rockingham Works, Rockingham Street. By 1893, the location was Trafalgar Street; but by the turn of the century, the firm was not listed and Thomas and his son Thomas Mettam were workers in the horn trade, not employers.
