William Kent (bapt.1784-1851) was the son of Joshua (a scissorsmith) and his wife, Martha. William followed his father’s trade and was listed in a directory in 1818 at Silver Street. In 1821, two scissorsmiths were listed under that name – one at Coalpit Lane, the other at Backfields. By 1825, William Kent’s address was Carver Street, where he was a scissors and silversmiths’ shears manufacturer. He died in 1851, aged 66 (his burial was at St Paul’s on 1 April).
His son was Abel (1814-1856). He was a scissorsmith, too, though in the Census (1841) his occupation was publican (at The Ball, Carver Street). He became insolvent as a scissorsmith in 1842, but resumed trading. In 1852, Abel was listed at 51 Carver Street (the former address of his father), where he was a scissors and silversmith’s shears manufacturer. He lived at that address with his wife, Mary, and mother, Elizabeth (a glove maker). Abel died on 26 June 1856, aged 42, and was buried at the General Cemetery. Mary had predeceased him a month earlier, on 10 May 1856.
