A scissors manufacturer, born in Sheffield in about 1792, James Taylor was the son of Joseph, a haft presser. The earliest listing for a scissors manufacturer of that name was in 1833 in Fitzwilliam Street. By 1837, Taylor had moved to Eldon Street. However, he died on 22 August 1840, aged 48, from ‘consumption’. In the General Cemetery register, his residence was recorded as Tapton Hill, Nether Hallam. He apparently left a widow, Mary, who was buried in the same grave in 1855, when she was aged 62.
