Charles Barber (1860-1932) was the son of George (a blade forger), and his wife, Harriet. Charles became a table knife cutler, who was in business in Rockingham Street by 1895. By 1901, he traded from 76 Backfields. Charles and his wife, Annie E. Bramall, had two sons – Tom (1878-1949) and Charles Jun. (1880-1938) – who joined the firm. Charles Sen., of Bruce Road, died on 8 September 1932, leaving £3,066. The firm passed eventually to a third generation: Tom’s son, Tom Sydney Barber (1906-1976), and Charles Jun.’s son, Charles Oliver Barber (1906-1964). In the early 1960s, city redevelopment led to a move from Backfields to Mary Street (where Barber’s traded until the early 1970s). It made table knives and carvings sets. Knives marked ‘Charles Barber & Co’ may have been made by this firm. Apparently, it exported to Canada to leading retailers, such as Eaton’s.
