Robert Baxter was variously described as a hardware man, a merchant, and table knife manufacturer. He was listed in 1833 as a merchant, living in Fargate. Later, he resided in Norton Lees. Towards the end of the 1830s, he was involved in successive partnerships with Potts, Brumby, and Brown (see Staniforth, Parkin & Co). When these ended, Baxter apparently traded as Robert Baxter & Co, until he became insolvent in 1844 (when he was based in Arundel Street). His subsequent career has not been traced, though the name was later acquired by Lockwood Bros, which used it in conjunction with a picture of a monkey.
