James Benn (1817-1886) may have been the son of Marmaduke (a cutler) and his wife, Ellen. James was enumerated in the Census (1841) as a table knife cutler in St Thomas Street, living with his wife Mary. His first directory listing was in 1856 as a table knife manufacturer in Kenyon Works, Edward Street. By 1862, he advertised from an address in Siddall Street. Between about 1868 and the early 1880s, he produced table cutlery and scissors from Garden Street Works, Garden Street. He lived at Edgehill Villa, Edgehill Road, Nether Edge. James Benn, ‘manufacturer’, Blake Street, died on 10 February 1886, aged 69. He was buried in the General Cemetery, leaving £255. He was interred with the remains of his wife, Mary, who had died only four days earlier, aged 67. Benn may have been related to James Benn, since between 1849 and 1851 both men occupied 18 Rockingham Street.
