This was established by Augustus Bright (c. 1831-1880), who was the son of Selim Bright. By the 1860s, Augustus was a merchant and cutlery ‘manufacturer’ in Vicar Lane. He appears, like his father, to have focused on South America, especially Brazil (with his ‘AMIGO’ trade mark). He became Brazilian vice-consul in Sheffield. He was also a captain in the Hallamshire Rifle Corps. Augustus married Kate Pitt (d. 1906), the daughter of the manager of the Theatre Royal in Sheffield. She later a published a comedy-drama, while their daughter, Dora Estella Bright (1862-1951), became a composer and pianist.
Augustus died at Olinda Cottage, Ashdell, on 1 November 1880, aged 50, from a ruptured blood vessel and heart disease. He was buried at the family’s private Jewish burial ground at Hollow Meadows (Rodmoor). He left under £3,000. Kate married the firm’s clerk, William E. Mawhood (1861-1949), who found that Bright’s was virtually insolvent. ‘A. BRIGHT & CO’, and ‘BRILHO’ and candlestick (which had been used by Selim Bright), were acquired by Atkinson Bros.
