In the Census (1841), James Burley was living in Froggatt Lane with son – also named James – and his wife, Elizabeth. In the local directory, James Burley (presumably Sen.) was listed as a pen, pocket, and sportsman’s knife manufacturer in Eyre Lane. James Burley Sen. died on 30 November 1848, aged 61, and was buried in St Peter’s churchyard (Elizabeth died on 28 June 1857, aged 73). Their son continued in Eyre Lane under the style ‘& Co’, manufacturing spring knives, table knives, and razors. James Burley Jun. died ‘after a long and painful illness’ on 1 February 1854, aged 39, at the house of James Hall in Furnival Street (Sheffield Independent, 4 February 1854). James, too, was buried at St Peter’s.
