This family (sometimes spelled Dewsbury) was French Huguenot in origin and settled in the West Midlands. According to family sources, Samuel Duesbury (1822-1909) was born in Manchester, the son of Samuel (a copperplate engraver) and Sarah née Bradley. In 1841, he was living with his parents in Salford, Manchester, and was an apprentice wood carver. He married Esther née Pryse in 1850 at the Upper (Unitarian) Chapel in Norfolk Street, Sheffield. He had started a wood carving business. He advertised in the local directory (1860) and The London Wholesale Directory (1861) from Backfields. Besides carved bread platters, he sold bread and butter knives. Duesbury lived in Nether Edge and employed one man and a boy. However, he became a photographer and by 1868 had emigrated to Australia. He died in Brisbane on 8 July 1909, aged 87, and was buried in Toowong Cemetery.
