Advertisment from 1895
Perkinton Bros – a manufacturer of table, butchers’, and daggers knives – was formed in 1873 at 218 Solly Street by William Perkinton (1843-1925), George Perkinton (1847-1918), and John Perkinton (1848-1922?). They were the sons of William Perkinton and his wife Frances. In 1873, John withdrew and in 1880 G. Perkinton was formed. It operated in Solly Street, but by the 1890s had relocated to Broad Works, St Thomas Street. William remained involved with the business, which was known as either ‘G. Perkinton’ or ‘George Perkinton’. John apparently established his own table cutlery enterprise in Carver Lane and West Street Lane. In 1886, he was arrested for allegedly receiving and selling goods stolen from Atkinson Bros in Milton Street (Sheffield Independent, 24 April 1886). In 1907, George Perkinton withdrew from the business and William took charge.
George Perkinton, Victoria Road/Broomhall Road, died on 24 March 1918, aged 71. He left £6,566 to William. The latter, Silvan Villa, Chantrey Road, Norton, died on 17 April 1925, aged 83. He left £345 to William Perkinton, manufacturer. This William Perkinton (1874-1933) may have been the son of George. Certainly, ‘George Perkinton’ continued to be listed as a table knife manufacturer in the 1920s in Broad Lane and St Thomas Street. The last works address was Orange Street in 1936. William Perkinton, of Clarkehouse Road – presumably the last Perkinton in the business – died at The Edge, Saltergate, Bamford, on 15 July 1933, aged 59. He left £5,296.
