This firm was owned by Naftali [Naftoli] Krausz (1895-1975), who was born into a Hungarian Jewish family. His parents were Shimon and Sarah; his brother was Armin Krausz, who partnered Harris Miller. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, Armin helped Naftali set up home in Sheffield. In 1939, he was living at Havelock Street and described his occupation as cutlery manufacturer (Register of England & Wales, 1939). In 1942, he began manufacturing (or selling) cutlery in Devonshire Street. Naftali became naturalised in 1947. After the war, Ellis & Co was listed as a cutlery manufacturers and forgers in Broomhall Street (with a forging and grinding department at Silsuly Works, Carlisle Street). In the 1950s, Broomhall Street alone was the company address. Naftali, who patented new methods of grinding and polishing the bolsters of table knife blades and glazing knife blades, was also involved with the management of Harris Miller. In 1951, he was living at Filey Street and a director of Ellis & Co and N. Silsuly Ltd (an engineers), which were both at Broomhall Street. Ellis & Co, Silsuly Works, Carlisle Street was liquidated in 1958, due to its liabilities. Naftali Krausz then retired due to ill-health. He died in Manchester on 22 August 1979, aged 84.
