An advertisement (1892) provided an establishment date of 1832, though this probably refers to the company that Fawsitt took over – Henry Youle. Fawsitt’s was a merchant, which sold fine table cutlery, pocket and hunting knives, razors, and scissors at Wentworth Works, Burgess Street. South Africa was evidently one of its export markets. The owner was apparently Hubert Morland Fawsitt, who had been born in Scotland. In 1890, he sold the business to Colquhoun & Cadman, Douglas Works, 113 Arundel Street. In the Sheffield directory (1905), Colquhoun & Cadman had adopted the ‘Fawsitt’ name in a characteristic scroll trade mark with the words ‘H.M. FAWSITT & CO PRIZE’. In 1907, Fawsitt’s name passed to Ellin at Sylvester Works, after the latter had absorbed Colquhoun & Cadman. The ‘Fawsitt’ name was listed in directories until about 1917. Hubert M. Fawsitt apparently became an insurance manager. He died at Southsea on 4 September 1907, aged 50, leaving £71.
